Twice this week I've seen posts about Green Porno; once on swissmiss and today on Apartment Therapy Re-Nest. I hadn't heard of them before. They are very short films starring Isabella Rossellini and they are visually stunning. You can see them all here on the Sundance Channel website with season one about insects and season two about sea life...all scientifically accurate and very educational! My favorite so far, Limpits:
I never respond or forward chain letters or email, but this one involves a giveaway and it's sweet rather than threatening (don't you just love those ones that say something like "pass this on to 10 people or else!") Anyway, this is a pay-it-forward giveaway (pay-it-forward may feel a bit overdone or cliche, but it's oh so sweet).
Here's the scoop. I happened to go to the blog City of Dionne at the right time this morning and saw her post on a pay-it-forward project and was one of the first five to respond. Whoever
participates makes something for the first five people to comment on
their blog, and those five people have to take note of the following to
receive their gift:
This offer does have some restrictions and limitations so please read carefully: 1. I make no guarantees that you will like what I make. Whatcha get is whatcha get. 2. What I create will be just for you, with love. 3. It’ll be done this year (2009). 4.
I will not give you any clue what it’s going to be. It will be
something made in the real world and not something cyber. It may be
weird or beautiful. Or it may be monstrous and annoying. Heck, I might
bake something for you and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that’s
for sure! 5. I reserve the right to do something strange. 6. In return, all you need to do is post this text on your blog and make 5 things for the first 5 to respond to your blog post. 7. Send your mailing address - after I contact you. (Be sure to leave a working email!)
IMPORTANT: This offer is null and void if I do not see you post your own blog to pay this forward (please do so within 24 hours of my contacting you to make it easy).
The first five to comment on this post and
agree to do the following (mention that you are going to do the
"Pay-it-Forward" Project" in your comment so I know) will receive something (oh, the possibilities) made by me.
Apparently, gift-giving is in the air; Boo gifted these rocks he found outside to me this morning:
Just a little note to say that I'm stuck with the flu. Boo got it in the middle of the night after Disneyland, I started feeling crumby yesterday, and Jeff is feeling it come on today. Man, it seems that each time we visit our family at least one of us gets sick. I guess running around like crazy and having fun can wear you out and all those new germs are floating around that you're not accustomed to.
Anyway, I'm hoping to feel better quickly; Boo did, but he's a kid and kids are made of rubber. Oh well, it's worth it to see everyone we haven't seen in much too long.
I'm kind of having a down day...I guess we're all allowed to have those. I'm trying to get everything together and for some reason, it's stressing me out. The last trips I've taken, I hauled all my stock that is listed in my shop with me, but this time I have too much inventory to do that. So, Jeff is going to ship whatever sells and I'm going to put a note in the shop that items won't ship until such-and-such a date while he's down with us. I'm still figuring out what to do with all the made-to-order stuff.
So, I've been thinking about all the fun stuff we plan on doing while on our visit to help me not stress out. I'm going to make dumplings with my grandmother (they are very different than any other I've ever seen or eaten; they are meat filled and have a good share of nutmeg in them), buckwheat pancakes with my grandfather (it's his specialty...besides fries...they are more like crepes than pancakes). I also plan to do lots of baking since we are oven-less right now; maybe some of the ever popular macarons and marshmallows. Oh, and we're going to go to Disneyland! That's very exciting! It will be nice to have a day devoted to sheer fun! We weren't going to take Boo until he was around 5, but he's going on 4 and Jeff and I can't wait! I'd also like to go to Palm Springs (not too far from my parents' house), go to an art museum with my friend Risa, antiquing/thrifting with my mom and youngest sister, visit with my dear friend Katie and her boys. And, the day after we get there, we'll be taking Boo and his cousin (she's 2 1/2) to be photographed for Easter with real bunnies! Oh, and a birthday party for Jeff's dad where Boo will be able to play with his other cousins!
We have a lot to look forward to and to be thankful for. It's always fun to see our family and we try to cram way too much in, and it's the same when they visit me...now just to get everything ready to go...if I can just get on that plane...what a sigh of relief that will be!
I've been fiddling around with how many blogs I want to list to the left there; I really wanted to keep the list manageable because it's the list I use to visit blogs most every day. And sheesh, it takes a lot of time to visit all those lovely blogs each day. But, today, I said "screw it" and put some more up...because I figure that I don't have to get through that list each day if I don't have time...but, I'm fickle with that, so we'll see. Oh, and I combined the "remodel" category into the "modified manufactured" category even thought the remodel posts come before I started the series. I also started a new category "I love how the light comes in my kitchen window." because it's a great way to photograph everyday things...the light makes everything so beautiful.
With regard to that...I took this picture weeks ago and haven't posted it because my lunch was so...ordinary. Sometimes I like what I call a "poo poo platter lunch," and that's just what this is: some apple slices, cottage cheese and some canned, seasoned corn, but this light is so nice:
Also, I will be out of state visiting family at the end of the month until the middle of April, so blog posts will be spotty. However, Jeff will take some vacation time and be with us (Boo and myself) for a little over a week and he will ride his motorcycle down; I say this because I will be doing a two-part series with regard to his trip (one for each way)...he's stopping at some of California's best hamburger eateries - three each way! I will post his hamburger adventure here. Of course, these "best" places are limited to where he is on his ride...he had to space them out for "meal times." Also, they depend on accessibility for him...San Francisco has some great stops, but riding a motorcycle through there is a little less than ideal, but we hope to do that as a family! Some fun, off-topic stuff to look forward to!
Okay, updates first...Boo and I were at our friends Jennifer and Chris' house yesterday, so I haven't gotten my ducks in a row to post about the cute little mushroom pins for the Eco Etsy promo, but I'll work on that today. Also, you may have noticed that there haven't been any "Modified Manufactured" posts as of late...we've been really busy and haven't done much worth documenting; life goes in waves. I'm sure I'll have some more posts about the house soon, I'm going to start designing a built-in bookcase probably this week. Oh, and I haven't gotten all the supplies for the terrariums yet; I planned on doing that yesterday before we went to Chris and Jenn's, but we ran out of time. So, tomorrow, Boo and I are going to Jenny's and if we get out of the house in time, we'll get terrarium supplies first.
Now to the giveaway...perfect timing! If you recall, I recently posted about Noelle's wonderful shop and my Eco Etsy buddy, Cat of Uncorked and Polarity is doing a giveaway! You can win a shirt from the Xenotees shop (valued under $22)...check it out here for more info! You'll need to leave a comment about Xenotees shirt you like best; it's hard to choose, but I'm sure you won't be surprised when I say mine is the Japanese Star Moss:
Also, Noelle just started a blog! You can check it out here!
Wow! It really was a busy weekend! We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at our church (our family, unfortunately, is too far away to meet for each holiday) on Thursday. We managed to stay away from the shopping craziness for the most part on Friday (we really limit our consumerism). On Saturday, we went to a railroad show that was more delightful than I thought it would be; Boo LOVED seeing all the model trains and most were right at eye-level for him! We got a second Thanksgiving dinner at our friends' house on Sunday because they had Thanksgiving dinner somewhere else and they love the leftovers, so they decided to do the whole shebang a second time!...Whew!
Now, I'm working to get my new project to a stage where I can photograph it. I finally worked out most, if not all, the bugs and now I'm getting a bunch done for the photos. I'm hoping to get them listed soon, but they may be perfect to start off the new year!
No pictures today, but I thought I would catch you up!
...but I've been seeing Christmas trees in the home improvement stores while getting supplies for the new place (so they've been on my mind) and I relaxed a bit with the current issue of Dwell today and saw an Unica Home ad for the Kuno Prey Christmas tree; I fell in love with this tree last year because it's got a modern, yet vintage feel (so me!) and it isn't a PVC tree! It's "crafted from industrial bottle brushes and painted wood." Now, that's modern and vintage! Here's a look:
I'd better get back to thinking about Halloween however; even though we won't be able to decorate with the move, I want desperately to go to a pumpkin patch and it will be a nice break from the craziness (besides, my son will LOVE all the pumpkins).
A short post today, folks, this move will climax this weekend...I think! :)
So, I feel a bit productive even though I'm moving! However, the move will get more intense as the week progresses. We have a lot to do and flooring to re-do at the new place - yikes! I hope to have some before and after pictures to share once things have settled (that may be awhile - ha!).
Posts may be a bit spotty the next few weeks as we are in the midst of moving. I'm very excited that our new place has a wood stove and I plan on not only using it to heat the house, but to curl up by and to cook on! So, when the treasury opened today, I decided to make the theme "Curl up by the fire":
