Breakfast on the Brain

Last night I had breakfast for dinner...heuvos rancheros. I'm still thinking about it. Corn tortillas, enchilada sauce, re-fried pintos, cheese, scrambled eggs, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Seriously.

This morning, I decided to make some whole wheat toast with some peanut butter and honey drizzled on the top. So I went to open the new bottle of honey I purchase and the lid was a bit crooked and the seal opened...damn it.

So, I've got breakfast on the brain today and I've found a couple of items that are breakfast-related recently that I'm again...still thinking about.

I don't have a coffee maker or espresso machine at home because I'm the only one who drinks coffee. So, I make myself tea. If I did have a means to make coffee at home, I would have a french press (Jenny recently got a new one that's stainless steel...her glass one broke...love the idea of a stainless one) or another simple beauty:

Anyway, other than breakfast daydreaming, I'm planning on making a few things for the shop today. I have something else I've made recently as well that I need to get in the shop too...onward!

Lichen and Moss In Situ

I found a couple of my pieces in use at their new homes recently...where they should be. I think they look quite happy.

Up first in the home of Becky, aka sweetie pie press:

Winter Snack

I've been eating a winter version of one of my favorite warmer weather snacks.

This time it's:

1. plain yogurt

2. diced apple

3. a scant handful of pecans (walnuts are cheaper, but I've found they often have a bitterness...unless freshly shelled)

4. a drizzle of honey

 

I also just listed some peppermint stripe vintage goodness in my shop.

 

We have another sunny day here; cold, but sunny. It's supposed to rain again soon, so I hope to soak up the sun while I can. I'm still saving seeds from the foods I eat for a fine art series. You can follow me on Twitter for a small detail on each one.

 

Eating Carrots

My good friend Jenny emailed me a carrot recipe she made up spontaneously this past week. It was inspired by some big carrots she had kicking about and a regular side dish at a local fancy restaurant that is served year-round. She made this with what she had on hand. it's so simple, yet the flavor is so complex...delicious...and the perfect thing for those big carrots (besides juicing them).

Grated Carrots with Slivered Almonds

1 tsp butter

1/3 cup slivered almonds

1 cup grated carrots (when I made this, it only took one big carrot)

salt

Melt the butter in a skillet, add the almonds, and stir until they are golden and toasted. Add grated carrot, stir to mix, and finish with a sprinkle of salt.

A winner...perfect as a side dish or snack with the warmth and toasty-ness for winter and the hope for spring.

Meanwhile, the sun continues to show it's face on a pretty continual basis - so wonderful. I rescued an old organ bench from my church that was kicking around and taking up space....I'm going to use it as a spot for my succulents under a window. I'll start looking out for small sheet pans at thrift stores to put on the bench and then place the succulents on them. My poor succulents have been relegated to a small counter spot in the laundry room. It will be nice to have them part of the living space again. I may even be able to add to them slowly.
